INTERVIEW: Bioli - Skincare reinvented in the era of biotechnology

By Ninon L'Hostis

Nina Wiberg Rosenquist conceived Bioli in 2021 out of a need to create a responsible, scientifically tested routine. On the cusp of her thirties, the entrepreneur was confronted with skin problems for the first time in her life. A cause that would become her passion and the foundation of her sustainable label bearing the charming name Bioli, an abbreviation of the term "organic." Danish by birth, Nina Wiberg Rosenquist has a vision of beauty that aligns with the values of her native country. On the occasion of Bioli's French arrival at The Care , she tells us about the contours of her creation with some bonus beauty tips! Meet her.

Science at the heart of the project

" From the very beginning, I teamed up with leading scientists in the field of biotechnology to ensure that Bioli was based on solid knowledge and innovation ," Nina explains. Bioli stems first and foremost from extensive research on enzymes , a gentler alternative to vitamins and acids. While Nina was working in the field of biotechnology, she discovered that these proteins are a real gold mine, both powerful and gentle, but also more sustainable to produce. The story then continues in a laboratory alongside passionate people, as Nina explains: "Very quickly, I thought I had to develop enzyme-based skincare, and why not extend this approach to everything, by choosing ingredients suitable for sensitive skin and packaging with the lowest possible impact. " A perfect combination of sustainability and innovation, Bioli is dedicated to creating a more responsible future of beauty. After several versions, nine in total, the first product was born: the Moisturizing and Protective Day Cream .

Sustainability is reflected in the very heart of the packaging, which is fully compostable. " Our pots are made from fermented microorganisms and decompose completely in 52 weeks in a home compost. They are delivered in FSC-certified paper bags ," explains Nina. This commitment demonstrates a bond of trust between the brand and its customers. Bioli aims to set an example with transparency in both the composition of its day cream and the packaging that surrounds it. The designer calls this lifestyle " Biomovement ," which could be translated as "bio movement" in French.

Bioli released its first product a few months ago, a Moisturizing and Protective Day Cream , developed using BioProtect technology. Its formula is based on a proprietary enzymatic technology capable of neutralizing environmental stressors, including free radicals , which are responsible for skin aging. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe and calm the skin. " Unlike plant-based antioxidants such as green tea or petrochemical-derived vitamins C and E, BioProtect, derived from biotechnology, is gentler on sensitive skin, requires much less water, energy, and CO₂ to produce. It helps preserve farmland for food rather than cosmetic ingredients ," explains Nina. A commitment to personal but also collective well-being.

In an increasingly competitive clean beauty environment, Bioli stands out for its committed process from start to finish, as Nina explains: " Bioli looks at the big picture: before, during, and after use, as well as inside and out. We think carefully about how ingredients are developed, how they work on sensitive skin, and what their effects are after use ." Added to this is a great focus on packaging, the biggest scourge of the cosmetics industry (55,000 tons of plastic thrown away each year). " At Bioli, we strive to meet and exceed regulations, and we want to prove that high-quality formulas, good design, and sustainability can truly coexist ," adds the founder. Bioli in three words? Biotechnology , biodegradable , bioconscious . As Nina explains, the latter is a neologism: " This last notion is a creation of ours. It's about listening to your body while leading a conscious life and making thoughtful choices. "

A committed story

If someone had told her she would one day work in the beauty industry, Nina Wiberg Rosenquist would surely have been amused. " When I was younger, I did a lot of sports, I never wore makeup, and I barely used skincare products ," she explains. After studying communications and economics, she landed her first job at the Danish company Novonesis , the world's largest supplier of enzymes. A first aside that would fuel her future project. In 2021, she imagined Bioli as a response to her skin problems and developed the outlines of a brand that she wanted to be rooted in the ecological concerns of her time.

With a desire to innovate and share her intimate experience with as many people as possible, Nina delves into the complexity of formulations to produce a cutting-edge range suitable for all skin types. " This motivated me to create something sustainable and based on science. So I wouldn't say I chose beauty; I rather felt I had the necessary knowledge and therefore the responsibility to share what I had learned ," she explains. Originally from Denmark, she also cultivates an education that taught her respect for ecosystems . " There are strong initiatives in Denmark in the areas of food, beverages and energy, but this awareness is lacking in the field of skincare. "

Nina Wiberg Rosenquist has multiple projects in mind for Bioli, including new products coming in 2026: " We are working hard and are very excited to launch two new products next year: an all-in-one cleanser and exfoliator and an ultra-potent bioactive serum. Both products are currently being tested by large panels to ensure they are hypoallergenic and suitable for fragile skin ."

Nina Wiberg Rosenquist's Beauty Routine

At The Care , we love learning more about our designers' beauty routines. Nina Wiberg Rosenquist focuses on simple but effective rituals that fit with her busy lifestyle. After cleansing her face, she applies a protective and moisturizing Bioli day cream to damp skin to facilitate application. " Then I always apply sunscreen (SPF 20, fragrance-free, which lasts eight hours). Even if I don't go out much, I use SPF daily because of my acne scars and melasma. Through my research with Bioli, I've learned a lot about skin cancer, so protection is essential for me, both with SPF and an antioxidant-rich cream as an extra line of defense," she explains. She only allows herself a few drops of serum when her skin demands it, such as in the summer.

In the evening, Nina removes her makeup with a gentle milk, dries her face with an Egyptian cotton washcloth , and reapplys Bioli day cream. To prepare for bed, the entrepreneur shares a fun hair anecdote: " At night, I tie my hair in a bun so it doesn't touch my face while I sleep, which also helps because I produce a lot of sebum on my scalp. My kids and husband always make fun of me in the morning with my messy bun. "

In her own definition of beauty and well-being, Nina places a high value on skin health . " What I really love is skin care that is simple, effective, and brings peace of mind. That's also why I love being part of The Care: it's a source I trust to have selected the best ," she tells us. A partnership we can't wait to share with you!
